Pretty and unique vintage Russian lacquer box or "palekh" box is made out of wood and hand painted black with a gold leaf design around the sides and the outer edge of the top and has a beautiful scene of horses, chariots, riders, trees and a castle or church painted on the lid with a high gloss lacquer coating. The box has a hinged lid that opens and is painted a pretty shade of red on the inside. Please note that the box doesn't open fully, closer to about 75%.
Palekh is a style of Russian folk painting that first appeared at the beginning of the 19th century and is done with tempura paints. The artists typically use single hair brushes, egg tempura and real gold, making each box an exquisite piece of art!
The box is signed in the upper left corner with "Troika" and in the upper right corner with the initials "C.T". (Please see photos for details). Excellent like-new condition and a great display piece, and you can also use it to store jewelry or other tiny trinkets or treasures. You could also use it as a chest or trunk in a 1:12 scale dollhouse too! This piece has such amazing detail and is even prettier in person.
Measures 4 3/8" long x a little over 1.5" wide x 1 1/8" tall.
**Please note that this is a collector's item and is not intended for children as some of the pieces are small and could possibly become choking hazards.
All items come from a smoke-free, chemical-free, and pet-friendly environment. We do have one shop cat but she is terrible at wrapping so we don’t usually ask her for her help! Our inventory is also stored in a room that she does not have access to, but since cat hair can possibly be transferred from our clothing please let us know if you have allergies or sensitivities to cats and we will take extra precautions.
